Ahtanum View Corrections Center (AVCC) is located on 7.7 acres in a rural setting surrounded by apple orchards, six miles west of Yakima.  Co-located on this site is a 60-bed work release facility.  AVCC is a minimum-custody facility that houses adult male offenders who may be elderly, disabled, or have medical conditions that can be treated more easily than at a larger facility.  AVCC employs approximately 80 staff members.

Offender Population

Current statistics are found in DOC's monthly brochure.

Facility History

In June 1997, AVCC opened its doors to offenders and was the first of its kind in Washington to house aged, medically challenged and disabled offenders who are better suited to program in a small facility.

Programs

An instructor is provided by Walla Walla Community College to teach basic education and offer GED certification.  Classes are offered during the afternoon and evenings to accommodate offenders that work full-time. These classes teach skills in reading, writing, and math.  Offender change programs, like Partners in Parenting, are also available.

Offenders assist in the day-to-day operation of the facility.  AVCC on-site support jobs include custodial, recycler, food service, unit porters, laundry, warehouse, barber, clerks, offender assistant program, medical porter and plant maintenance.  The Recreation Department offers fee-based programs in weightlifting and hobby crafts to promote wellness and physical fitness for offenders.

Correctional Industries Programs

AVCC has a Correctional Industries sewing shop, which employs 10 offenders.

Community Involvement

A substantial number of community volunteers offer a variety of social and religious programming opportunities for offenders at AVCC.  There are several volunteer religious groups representing Muslim, Protestant, Jehovah's Witness, Seventh Day Adventist, Native American, Pentecostal, and Catholic faiths.  These groups conduct offender services, counseling and religious studies.  Volunteers offer support programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, hobby crafts, Karaoke, Jammin (music group), and individual counseling.  In addition, offenders assist with preparing materials for the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) annual evening lighting ceremony.
