Agency Accountability

The Department of Corrections is accountable to the people of Washington for delivering results that improve public safety.

How We Promote Accountability at DOC

DOC meets regularly with Governor Chris Gregoire as participants in the Government Management, Accountability and Performance (GMAP) program (accountability.wa.gov) DOC provides in-depth analysis and results-oriented action plans in GMAP forums chaired by the Governor.  November's presentation focused on public safety - including topics on community supervision and managing violations.

DOC also conducts internal GMAP forums that analyze progress toward achieving agency-level goals, as identified in the Department’s Strategic Plan (PDF). GMAP results have included increased problem solving, informed decision-making, improved recruitment, safety, business practices, and offender supervision and re-entry planning.  For information on effectiveness of the performance measures, OFM's Agency Inventory Performance Measure Assessment Dec. 3, 2007.

DOC also promotes accountability through its commitment to achieving accreditation from the American Correctional Association for all DOC facilities. Successful accreditation means DOC facilities meet accepted national standards for staff training, fiscal controls, safety procedures, food service, sanitation, offender discipline rules and other performance categories. Meeting ACA standards helps reduce the risk of litigation and provides public assurances that correctional facilities are working safely and effectively.

A third way DOC promotes accountability is through its Internal Audit Program. This program helps staff effectively carry out their duties by providing objective, professional analyses of operations, including possible recommendations for improvement.   DOC works closely with the State Auditor's Office to insure complaints are resolved.
