Reduce our Dependence on Non-Renewable Energy and Fuel Sources

Hybrid Vehicles

Hybrid perimeter patrol vehicle

Hybrid vehicles are being used for perimeter patrol at several facilities.  Hybrids perform better in the slow, stop and go driving required of perimeter patrol vehicles and need less maintenance.  Averaging 550 miles on 11 gallons of fuel, hybrid vehicles cut fuel use in half or more from other perimeter vehicles.  Of course they also reduce air pollution.

Bio-diesel

B-20 (a blend of 20 percent bio-based diesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel) is being used at three facilities to fuel all diesel vehicles, including the buses that transport offenders to their assigned facilities. Two more facilities are poised to start.

Reel Mowers

Non-motorized push mowers are in use at three facilities to cut grass around offender housing units, reducing fuel use, air pollution, and noise.

Re-lamping

Most facilities are involved in replacing older fluorescent bulbs and ballasts with more efficient, less toxic models. Utility companies often provide rebates to assist with these projects and the electricity savings are significant.

Boiler Maintenance

Facilities are focusing on regular boiler maintenance and filter changes to improve heating system efficiency. In addition, turning down hot water temps saves energy as well.

Energy Efficiency Projects

DOC is partnering with Energy Performance Contractors to identify and implement a variety of energy saving ideas, using cost savings from reduced energy use to pay for the projects.
