Reclaimed water toilets
Washington Corrections Center uses treated wastewater to wash down its sewage treatment plant. It also reuses laundry rinse water for the next wash cycle.
Reduced flow showerheads and faucet aerators are common in many institutions.
Many facilities save water by reducing lawn and landscape watering. Coyote Ridge Corrections Center reduced its water use by 25 percent by changing to drought-tolerant landscaping.
Rainwater catchment tanks
Cedar Creek Corrections Center and, on a smaller scale, Stafford Creek Corrections Center, capture rainwater from roofs and store it in tanks for garden watering. Monroe Corrections Center has two new LEED™ certified buildings that capture rainwater for use in flushing toilets.
Finding and repairing leaks can be challenging. However, Washington Corrections Center, the Penitentiary and McNeil Island Corrections Center have saved tens of thousands of gallons of water per day by doing just that.
