Tuition Reimbursement

The Department recognizes the value of well-educated and well-trained staff and supports the tuition reimbursement program within available funds. DOC employees are encouraged to further their personal and professional development goals through appropriate formal education programs.

Eligible employees will reimbursed a maximum of:

  • 85% for undergraduate degree level or below;
  • 100% for Continuing Education.

(As of July 1, 2010, through July 1, 2011, college costs' reimbursement will be suspended in order to meet the agency’s budget challenge)

Permanent, permanent-project status, and probationary employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement, for courses offered by accredited institutions, when there is a clear relationship between the course(s) and the employee's present job, projected career path within the Department, or attainment of a degree that benefits the employee and agency.

A grade of 2.0 or higher, pass in a pass/fail structure, or a Certificate of Completion for Continuing Education Units is required to receive tuition reimbursement.

Tuition Waivers

State-funded educational institutions have established local procedures for granting tuition waivers to state employees. Typically, tuition waivers are only approved when space is available after normal registration is completed. If approved, the employee may be charged a small administrative fee for participation in classes. Tuition waiver fees are not reimbursable.
