PRESS RELEASE: Units on Lockdown at Washington State Penitentiary after Multi-Inmate Fight

WALLA WALLA – Two West Complex living units at the Washington State Penitentiary were placed on lockdown after warning shots were fired during a fight involving multiple inmates.

At approximately 8:30 pm on Monday, August 24, approximately 22 close custody inmates began fighting in the outdoor recreation yard. Staff issued multiple warnings to stop. When the inmates refused to comply, three warning shots were fired.

Four inmates, during the fight, received injuries requiring medical attention and one staff member received minor injuries in the response. At this time, the cause of the incident is unknown and under investigation.

Delta and Echo units will remain on lockdown while staff conduct an investigation. Visiting scheduled for these units on Wednesday, August 26 has been cancelled. All other units will be operating normally.

The Washington State Penitentiary houses over 2550 inmates in minimum, medium, close and maximum custody.
