FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 28, 2008
OLYMPIA – The Department of Corrections (DOC) today issued a request designed to assess the level of interest in private contractors to operate work release centers in this state.
Interested contracts have until May 21 to reply to the “Request for Information (RFI)” document.
In addition to determining the level of interest in private companies operating the centers, the RFI also seeks information about the type of services they would be willing to provide to offenders. Such services typically include chemical dependency and mental health treatment, job search assistance and education and other programs that have proven to be successful.
DOC currently operates 15 work release facilities in Washington and is required by law to expand their mission to provide more services to offenders. DOC also plans to expand the number of work release centers in the state.
Many offenders spend their last six months of incarceration in work release getting practical experience in making positive choices and using newly acquired social skills. The work releases also provide supervision for offenders and a base at which they can get assistance to find jobs.
DOC’s current work release facilities are located in Yakima, Bellingham, Seattle, Spokane, Longview, Olympia, Tacoma, Kennewick, Port Orchard and Vancouver.
