DOC’s Melanie Roberts to Retire in June

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                      April 28, 2008

OLYMPIA – Melanie Roberts, the Department of Corrections’ (DOC) Assistant Secretary for Administrative Services, will retire at the end of June.

She is the second DOC Assistant Secretary to announce retirement plans. Earlier this week Ruben Cedeño, Assistant Secretary for Prisons, said he wanted to retire in mid-June.

In her 30-year state career, Roberts also worked for the Departments of Social and Health Services, Fish and Wildlife, Community, Trade and Economic Development, Labor and Industries and the Office of Financial Management.  She served with the DOC the last three years of her career.

“I can’t say enough about the impressive leadership that Melanie provided this agency during a very difficult time,” said DOC Secretary Eldon Vail. “I am absolutely convinced our budget challenges would have been much worse without her willingness to fight on our behalf to articulate and advocate for the agency.”

Vail also noted Roberts’ oversight over Capital Programs as DOC added more prison beds in a shorter period of time than ever before in the history of the agency.  She also made important improvements in the agency’s Human Resources operation and was instrumental in ensuring DOC’s new computerized offender tracking system, OMNI, will be operational June 30, he added.
