FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 16, 2008
OLYMPIA--Department of Corrections Secretary Eldon Vail today announced the appointment of Scott Blonien to the new position of Assistant Secretary for Government, Community Relations and Regulatory Compliance.
Blonien currently serves as chief of the Criminal Justice Division in the Washington Attorney General’s Office. He joined the Attorney General’s Office in 1987 and has served as DOC’s senior legal adviser for 21 years.
“Scott’s extensive knowledge of corrections issues generally—and more specifically his grasp of the challenges facing this Department—will serve the Department well as we work to achieve our ultimate goal of keeping the public safe,” Vail said.
“I come to this job with tremendous respect for the mission of the Department and the many dedicated corrections professionals I have come to know at DOC over the years,” Blonien said. “I look forward to this opportunity to help the public better understand the Department’s goals and challenges.”
As Assistant Secretary, one of Blonien’s top priorities will be to continue the Department’s efforts to build a culture of openness and accountability with the people of the state, Vail said.
As Assistant Secretary, Blonien will report directly to Vail and will oversee the Department’s legislative activities, Communications Department, Risk Management Department, investigations unit and policy office.
Blonien will begin his new duties no later than March 15.
