Two state prisons will receive awards from the Department of Ecology for having outstanding water treatment plants.
Cedar Creek Corrections Center in Thurston County and Olympic Corrections Center near Forks are among the 78 water treatment plants to win the annual Outstanding Water Treatment Plan award. There are about 300 wastewater treatment plants across the state.
“One of our goals as an agency is to return clean water back to the environment,” said David Jansen, director of Capital Programs for the Department of Corrections (DOC). “It’s a goal at all our treatment plants. These two facilities are consistently among the best in the state.”
Improving the cleanliness of wastewater is part of a broader sustainability effort at DOC which includes reducing the usage of natural resources, recycling, composting, and energy efficiency.
Department of Ecology will present the awards to Cedar Creek Corrections Center on May 28 and to Olympic Corrections Center on June 2. Olympic also received the award last year. Cedar Creek nearly received it as well.
“The staff members at these facilities didn’t just work really hard on this last year so they would win this award,” Jansen said. “This is the result of years of dedication on their part.”
These awards continue DOC’s record of environmental achievements as exemplified by the awards and recognitions for environmental performance. For more information see the DOC Sustainability plan http://www.doc.wa.gov/docs/SustainabilityPlan2006.pdf
