The Department of Corrections has developed a series of informative fact sheets that describe the various ways in which the agency helps prepare offenders to live law abiding lives and contribute to society. Find out how DOC is working to improve public safety by clicking on a link below and reading about some of our programs.

  • Chemical Dependency Fact Sheet
More offenders are convicted of drug offenses than any other crime category. Chemical addictions lead to continued cycling of offenders through halfway houses, community mental health agencies, emergency rooms, and in many cases, back to prison.
  • Community Justice Center Fact Sheet
The Department of Corrections currently operates six Community Justice Centers that provide comprehensive monitoring, programming, training, referrals and other important services to offenders who have been released from prison, jail, or sentenced directly by the court and are on community supervision.
  • Correctional Education Fact Sheet
The Department of Corrections contracts with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to provide basic skills and vocational certificates in each of the Departments 15 prisons.
  • Correctional Industries Fact Sheet
Thousands of offenders gain work experience and training as they produce high quality, competitively priced products, which translates into enormous benefits for taxpayers, the offenders who work and learn in Correctional Industries, and for its customers.
  • Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative (DOSA) Fact Sheet
The goal of DOSA is to reduce or eliminate confinement time for addicted offenders in exchange for full participation and completion of chemical dependency treatment and adherence to strict supervision requirements.
  • Mental Health Fact Sheet
DOC works closely with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to provide services for offenders with mental illnesses leaving prisons including those who qualify for the Dangerous Mentally Ill Offenders Program.
  • Reentry Initiative Fact Sheet
The Washington State Offender Reentry Initiative is a set of strategies that prepare offenders for release from Washington State prisons and/or jails. Successfully implemented, these strategies improve public safety, hold offenders accountable, and help to prepare the families and communities for offender transition and reentry.
  • Work Release Fact Sheet
Work release is an important part of the Department of Correction’s reentry program, which is designed to provide the education, job training and treatment off enders need in order to return to society as hardworking, family-oriented citizens.
