Airway Heights Corrections Center puts Facility on Lockdown after Offender Fight

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – The Airway Heights Corrections Center put its Medium Security Facility on lockdown late Sunday afternoon, February 17, following a fight involving approximately 16 offenders. As of Wednesday, February 20, the facility was still on modified lockdown while investigations are conducted.

The incident occurred about 4 p.m. February 17, when multiple offenders began fighting on the walkway between two of the medium-security living units. Staff members were required to use force to break up the fights.

As a result of the fights, one offender was taken to the hospital, treated and returned to Airway Heights the same day. Three staff members received minor injuries from separating combatants, but no staff members were assaulted by offenders during the fight.

The Medium Security Facility, which houses approximately 1,570 offenders in six living units, remains on modified lockdown while the staff conducts investigations. Visiting was cancelled for Monday, February 18, and volunteer programs are cancelled through Thursday, February 21.

The adjacent Minimum Security Unit, which houses 600 offenders, is not on lockdown.

UPDATE 2/22/2013: Airway Heights Corrections Center is no longer on lockdown.  Work and school programs for offenders were resumed on Thursday, February 21, and visitation and volunteer programs are expected to resume Friday, February 22.
