Incarcerated individuals at Cedar Creek Corrections Center in Littlerock, Washington gathered together with their families in early December to celebrate the holidays during the annual Father and Child Holiday Gift Exchange event. Holiday decorations covered the gym, as kids had fun with their parents and traded gifts.
Over 50 inmates attended the event and, thanks to donations from the community, more than 250 toys were given to the children. Any toys left over from the event were given to Larch Corrections Center in Yacolt for their family-centered holiday event. Santa even stopped by to hand out a few gifts of his own to the kids.
Family-centered events help the department in its mission to improve public safety by treating everyone with respect and understanding and providing prosocial family opportunities to the incarcerated population. The event provides the chance for individuals to be more involved in their children’s lives leading to a smoother reentry into their communities.
“...this lets them (the children) know that dad still cares . . . so we’re still involved in our family and I think that’s very important,” said Carl Hogan. “Anything that can keep us connected with our family on the outside and shows them that we’re still interested in their lives means a lot to us.”
